and Allah said "And proclaim the pilgramage among men; they will come to thee on foot and on every kind of camel. Lean on account of Journeys through deep and distant mountain highways" Surah 22 ~ Al Hajj Part 27
There are fourteen locations in the Quran that requires the reciter to prostrate (Sajdah or Sudjood). This is similar to when, one prays (Salaah). Reciting in prostration three times "Glory to my Lord, The Most High" (Sub hana rabi yal'laah)
And Allah said "and we have sent down to you a reminder so that you may explain to mankind what was revealed, than perhaps they will reflect"

Surah An-Najm is the first surah that was prostrated upon. The prostration occured at the end of the surah and in itself dispels one of the myths that Iblis (Satan) shouted the verses, that gave rise to the Satanic Verses, which is untrue and should not be even considered as a possibility. The beauty and the poetry of Surah An-Najm caused the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) to prostrate and all present at time Muslim, non-muslim and the jinn followed suite.
